The coroner inquest investigating the collapse of a guest house owned by Synagogue Church which killed over 100 persons has indicted the church for negligence, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The coroner, instituted by the Lagos State government recommended that the contractors, that is Structural Engineer(s), Engineer Oladele Ogundeji and contractor (s) Engr Akinbela Fatiregun, of HardRock Construction Co Ltd., of the collapsed building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations be investigated and tried for criminal negligence by relevant authority; Synagogue Church of All Nations be investigated and proceeded against under the law by the relevant authority for not possessing necessary building permits;
“Relevant authority should carry out detailed ‘fitness for habitation test’ on all the structures building within the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, situated at Segun Irefin Street, Ikotun Lagos State immediately; CSP Haruna Alaba, the Divisional Police Officer, Ikotun Police Station should forthwith be transferred from the said Ikotun Police station and another Divisional Police Officer takes over; Government Agency responsible for ‘monitoring and inspection ‘ at every stage of construction should be alive to their responsibility and vigilant.
“Government agency must be rid of corruption, including issuance of fake receipts and greasing of palms during inspection of construction works on site; Statutory/first responders should be adequately equip to perform their functions effectively and efficiently.
“Government should reduce the cost of obtaining necessary building permits/ approval and remove all administrative bottlenecks in order to encourage individual/ organisation go through the due process of obtaining necessary building permits/approval before commencement of building construction(s),” the coroner said.
He also recommend that government should take steps to secure and preserve the site of any collapse building, so as not to compromise the conduct of investigation at the collapse site.
The inquiry sat for months and set July 8 for its ruling.
